Whenever I see people saying, "I can't imagine why anyone would do that" or "I couldn't do that", I just hear "either I lack self awareness, and so self-discipline, and would readily do worse in the same circumstance; or else I would let this happen to people I care about because I am too out of touch with my own savagery to protect them".

There are differences between individuals and groups, but none of us lacks an ancestral history of horrific savagery, and no ideology or indoctrination reliably contains it. Even if you could you wouldn't want to, because those who did would be helpless against those who chose not to.

Civilization is a carefully maintained illusion that can exist only under conditions of mutual trust and shared values.

The irony of Americans being shocked, horrified & indignant about this country or that country engaging in warfare is rich. Meanwhile, we’re too fat, stupid, distracted, privileged and indoctrinated to consider our forays into Serbia, Iraq (multiple times), Somalia, Libya, Syria and Afghanistan - not to mention our illegal entry into World War One or the countless coups that we’ve initiated over the past century.
